
Dr Adrian Hugh Bellengère
Adrian Hugh Bellengère is a Senior Lecturer at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Howard College School of Law, where he has also served in leadership capacities including Acting Dean and Head of School. He holds a PhD from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, an LLM with Distinction from the University of Aberdeen, and BA and LLB degrees from the University of Natal.
Adrian’s academic focus lies in adjectival law, environmental law, and the legal frameworks governing Antarctica. His current research explores South Africa’s role in Antarctic governance amid evolving socio-political and environmental conditions. An admitted Attorney (1996) and Conveyancer (1998), he resides in Durban.
He has published in leading legal journals such as the South African Law Journal, Potchefstroom Electronic Law Journal, and the South African Journal of Environmental Law and Policy. Adrian is the editor and co-author of The Law of Evidence in South Africa, and a contributor to several academic volumes. His research on the electronic service of court documents and on prior inconsistent statements has been cited in authoritative legal texts and by South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal and Constitutional Court.
Outside academia, Adrian has held key roles in sports administration, notably as Head of the Legal Commission for the Fencing Federation of South Africa. He also represented South Africa as Captain of the Men’s Foil team at the 1997 World Fencing Championships.
